Open access publication

Many funders of research require the work they support to be made freely available – this is referred to as “open access”.  Where possible, the cost of publishing under open access arrangements should be included in project costs.

The “Researcher@Library” website contains useful information on open access publishing including links to information on the open access policies of many funders and publishers.

Up-date June 2011

EPSRC mandates open access for EPSRC-funded articles submitted 1 September 2011

With immediate effect EPSRC requires that all published EPSRC-funded research articles which are submitted for publication as from 01 September 2011 must be made available on an open access basis.

The policy covers the access to research publications arising from EPSRC-sponsored research, and is being introduced to ensure that these are made as widely and freely available as practicable.

The policy is not prescriptive about how this is done: authors have the flexibility to choose an approach best suited to their field of research. The options are:

  • “Gold” - publishing directly in a subscription-free open access journal
  • “Green” - deposition of the peer-reviewed article (as accepted for publication) in an online repository; EPSRC would expect authors choosing this route to respect any embargo period required by the publishing journal

For staff at the University of Leeds depsit in the White Rose Research Online repositoryis the “green” option and will fulfil the conditions of EPSRC’s policy. Deposit is carried out via the Symplectic Publications Database. (For a guide to doing this see http://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/docs/leeds.html)

EPSRC will monitor compliance with this policy through their normal assurance processes.

For full details see the EPSRC Policy on access to research outputs.
